It is with great pleasure that Wierd Records presents Blacklist's debut album Midnight Of The Century. NYC's lone iconoclastic practitioners of the Very Rare lost art of bombastic, hedonistic, intellectual rock and roll, the band and its humanistic spirit has occupied a significant role in the tightly-knit community that is the Wierd world since its inception.
Midnight of the Century is a record full of loud hymns and manifestos of hope for and belief in a world of human interconnectedness, expressed through an authentic melancholy that refuses to separate the dreamer from reality. These eleven songs of loving hate for the post-everything epoch form the soundtrack to a truly uplifting journey that is as personal as it is universal. The record takes its title from an expression coined by the stubbornly hopeful revolutionary and novelist Victor Serge referring to one of the darkest alliances in one of the world’s darkest wars, and this moody marriage of extremity to romantic optimism is the hallmark of the album, both musically and lyrically. Mixed by Ed Buller (Suede, Slowdive, White Lies) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Muse, Jeff Buckley, Iron Maiden, U2), Blacklist takes the listener on a wild midnight ride with the black flag flying high in an intensely complex journey of pure pleasure-seeking rock and roll maximalism.

Wierd Records is proud to present the Wierd Compilation Volume II : Analogue Electronic Music 2008, an international collection of 39 trax by 30 bands producing contemporary music with analogue synthesizers, sequencers, and drum machines. This release is made up of four vinyl
LPs packaged in a deluxe gatefold sleeve and accompanied by a 32 page 12" x 12" book containing lyrics, band bios, and over 300 photos, many taken from live performances at the weekly Wierd label party, which has been active in New York City since 2003. Also included in the booklet is a statement of purpose for this vast project entitled '2008 : The Analogue Synthesizer as a Folk Instrument of Humanist Resistance' that is as ambitious conceptually as it is musically.
Over the past several years, electronic musicians have slowly removed
themselves from the visceral aspect of musical expression as they have
more completely embraced the computer as the generator of
contemporary sounds. It is in this climate that the Wierd Compilation
Volume II proposes that analogue electronic music no longer represents a
post-apocalyptic vision of an uncertain 'post-human' future as it once did
at the inception of New Wave in the late 1970's. Today, the situation is
precisely the opposite. In the world of 'click and drag' virtual software
synths, the analogue instrument represents a new form of resistance by
preserving and affirming the human presence of the artist through his
direct interaction with the machines and the electricity that runs through
them. In doing so, the supposedly outdated instrument is reborn as a folk
instrument not unlike the acoustic guitar, violin, or hand drum.
Inspired by the seminal compilations of early industrial music such as
Xtract Records' 'The Elephant Table Album' and 'Three Minute
Symphony', Third Mind Records' 'Life at the Top', and the 'Insane Music'
cassette series, the Wierd Compilation Volume II brings together
independent artists from the new minimal electronic music scene
emerging in New York, Miami, and all throughout continental Europe
with the the firmly established Noise scene in the US. In the same spirit
that these early genre-traversing compilations brought together both pop
and experimental artists who were united by their resistance to
the superficial excesses of commercial New Wave, the artists on this
release are united by their DIY attitude and their resistance to the virtual
excesses of modern laptop pop. All have found analogue synthesizers to
be the ideal instrument for producing raw, emotive music in a world
where the human touch and presence is quickly getting clicked and
dragged into oblivion.

Wierd Records is proud to present Martial Canterel‘s first full-length CD release entitled ‘Refuge Underneath‘, a compilation of the artist‘s first two long-deleted self-released cassette tapes ‘Drilling Backwards‘ (2006) and ‘Sister Age‘ (2004) as well as 5 previously unreleased tracks, all digitally re-mastered.
Over the past 5 years the state of electronic music has seen artists slowly remove themselves from their work and visceral musical ‘expression‘ in general. Traditional electronic machines have been replaced by the computer as the dominant generator of contemporary sounds. It is in this climate that Sean McBride, aka Martial Canterel, began performing at bars, clubs and private parties in Brooklyn, NY in 2002, functioning singlehandedly as the pioneer and instigator of what has now become a new movement of minimal electronic bands in the United States.
Martial Canterel records and performs using only vintage analogue synthesizers and sequencers, producing a highly-crafted, complex, and idiosyncratic form of electronic music that is simultaneously romantically melancholic and affirmatively aggressive. Inspired both by the first wave of relatively unknown minimal electronic bands in Northern Europe(a musical genre also often referred to as ‘minimal synth‘) and the seminal industrial noise bands such as Throbbing Gristle, SPK, and Cabaret Voltaire, Martial Canterel presents a new optimistic paradigm for electronic music in which the analogue synthesizer functions anew as a folk instrument of humanist resistance to a virtual ‘soft synth‘, iPod, and iTunes saturated world of ‘click and drag‘ dematerialized abstraction.

Inspired by groups such as The Comsat Angels, The Manic Street Preachers, Suede, The Sound, and For Against, Blacklist is simultaneously celebratory and melancholy, replacing the hysterical protest song of the 20th century with anthems for a new generation weaned on amusement and starved for confrontation. In today‘s world of faith-based violence, global disjunctures, and volatile identity politics, they create the soundtrack to an explosive resistance. The snide refusal of nihilism makes a loud and heavy romantic sound.
‘Solidaire‘ is a warning shot EP, readying audiences for their upcoming LP due out on Wierd Records this Fall. Featuring the propulsive cosmological love anthem, ‘Blue Shifted,‘ the filthy, sexy ode to George Orwell and P.O.U.M., ‘Shock In The Hotel Falcon,‘ and their version of one of the classic tracks of the French coldwave, ‘Pure Joy In My Heart,‘ ‘Solidaire‘ is a taste of things to come. Cosmopolitan coldwave rock and roll, bridging the gap between the north of France and Budokan, from the pathologically mobilized world outside to the elusive human experience.

In anticipation of their live US debut in a series of concerts in New York at the weekly party and supporting Xeno & Oaklander in April, Wierd is proud to now have the debut CD 'Fait Ses Courses' by Automelodi from Montreal now in stock! This carefully crafted 6 track release is a guaranteed dancefloor-burner, providing a truly modern synthesis of the cold uptempo analogue electronics of classic French Minimal Synth, the raw, sardonic heat-seeking swagger of early Italo Disco, and the icy, razor blade guitar and live drum sound of the great Vague Froide bands. We only have a limited quantity of these in stock to hold everyone over until Xavier and Co. wrap up the recordings for their debut full-length coming later this year so grab one while you can!

WIERD is proud to finally have available the debut CD 'Pursue the Tragic Tune' from Opus Finis! This fantastic duo summon the hot and dirty post-coital Miami sun to create a raw, dark, and incredibly aggressive form of idiosyncratic electronic music. Both performing and recording strictly live on entirely homemade and modified analogue gear, Ramiro Jeancarlo(also of Staccato du Mal) and C.E. Oni(Siamese Pearl) produce a menacingly sinister, hedonistic sound combining the direct, confrontational energy of classic British Industrial and Power Electronics with the cold, infectious rhythmic structures of the originary wave of European Minimal Electronics and EBM groups. This collection of 18 trax produced between 2004-2008 is a retrospective of sorts, gathering together unreleased studio tracks with songs from the likes of both the group's long-deleted, self-titled debut CDr(previously only available at the Neon Welt Festival, Germany in 2006) and the first 'WIERD Compilation'(also 2006). The release also demonstrates the group's vast range of musical composition, with songs spanning the gap from downtempo spacious industrial/Noise soundscapes with cryptic, distant, occult-laden vocal echoes to uptempo, claustrophobic dancefloor killers. We assure you if you live through this intense 76 minutes and 23 seconds, the only sunburn you'll feel is that of pure frozen hot pleasure on the inside!

5. The Nineteenth Sonnet of Winter's Plight (CLIP)
We're happy to say WIERD has aquired a large portion of the remaining copies of this excellent split release from Martial Canterel and Silent Signals(Dirk Klein of Echo West)! This CD, founded upon the time-honoured friendship of these two DIY synth enthusiasts, embarks on a journey beyond the Maginot, beyond the City Limits. Years wasted watching the erosive consequences of history, the synthesizer, having been through the years, punned and parodied, reclaims its necessity as the final instrument in resisting the waves of tomorrow. For Martial Canterel, this is some of the most direct and quickly conceived music he has to date recorded, as always recorded entirely live on analogue gear in one go. This release is here finally available in the US for the first time, quantities are limited!
Tracklisting:
1. Martial Canterel - 'Heresy and Innocence' (CLIP)
2. Martial Canterel - 'Backwards Falls' (CLIP)

A gathering together of twelve forgotten pieces and experiments from 2003-2007; Produced for and sold during the 'Cruelty Reigns in the Midwest' tour, October 2008, 'Cruelty Frames Our Age' is a kind of quick tribute to Chondritic Sound's "Cruelty Reigns Through Ages" K7s(CH-216/CH-216x) which were very quickly snatched up within weeks of their original release. Four of the songs on the CDr were not issued on the K7s, including 2 instrumentals.

2 Forest Of Opera (4:04)
3 Madrigals (3:10)
4 Against The Age (4:05)

Recorded under the alias 'Moravagine' between 2001 - 2003, 'Confusing Outsides' is M. Canterel's inaugural LP. Acknowledging the gross betrayals that loom in personal and public relationships, 'Confusing' attempts to stake out a place, perhaps, a 'hiding place' to collect one's self, to find the insides which hide outside. Using just a handful of synths, M. Canterel has come up with a soundtrack to loss, lack, and the impossibility of love. Mastered by Andreas Sippel of Second Decay. Original artwork by artist Cheyney Thompson.

Sleep Museum returns to Bloodlust! for the 4th in a series of EPs. "Home" is entirely new Sleep Museum: recorded in the confused swelter of summer 2008, it ranges from the deep and petulant bass sounds of "Solace" to the tortured soundscapes of "Bone In Leg", a 35 minute evisceration in tone. Love is lost in the choral pain of "Virtue" and entirely abnegated in "Give It Away". Down in the basement, where the will to live has replaced oxygen and your closest friend is the sweat on your back, "Without Foresight" whiles away the ever-night.

This is the third disk in the Bloodlust! Sleep Museum series, a continuing exploration of the (inner) frontiers of sound. Replica finds Sleep Museum at 3 am on the dark streets of Hamburg, looking for that strange bar on the colder side of the Elbe, down by the river where dawn never really arrives. "Body In Question" pulses with a shoegazing melancholia, the blurred beat of memory fading in motion and toil. "In Persistence, Pain" brings us to the dance floor, slicing arpeggios backing a painfully cynical look at the human condition. "None But This" takes us down to zero, absolute zero — music for driving the autobahn in a state of terminal fugue. "Recombinate" picks up the beat with a flanged bass as "Tar" pays a visit to a surreal landscape of pick-up-sticks drumbeats and melting synth: hot streets, tar, bitter persistence, zen misery to a double back beat. "In Time" is a dark, growling landscape of unearthly voices and experimental synth, dense and unyielding -- it clocks in at 32 minutes, time enough to get lost in the void. Professionally duplicated CD, single panel, double-sided insert; color artwork; in jewel box with shrinkwrap.

The second disc in a short series of EPs; Three
tracks of rhythmic, darkly melodic synth- and drum
machine-driven TRUE MINIMAL SYNTH music, with
unrepentantly eccentric vocals, and dour lyrics;
Utterly contemporary, yet also reminiscent of certain
late-1970s and early-1980s "cold" music - a hint of
Joy Division mood and a dose of electronic-era Death
in June; The fourth track is a more experimental vocal
piece, while the fifth track is a nearly 31-minute long
experimental analog synth piece, far closer to the M.B.
-style of dark electronics; We are calling this an EP,
even though it clocks in at 48-minutes; Professionally
duplicated CD, single panel, double-sided insert; color

Wierd is happy to announce the debut EP from Xeno and Oaklander is back in stock! Recorded entirely live in one go on October 1st, 2006, and played to loving death by all of the DJs at the Wierd weekly party for the past two years, 'Vigils' is now a classic document of the many multifaceted musical activities of Miss Liz Wendelbo and Sean McBride(aka Martial Canterel). Uptempo cold, distant, echo-laden synthesizers and drum machines provide a spacious, melancholic backdrop for Miss Liz's complex ephemeral lyrical presence. These 8 trax are both intimately fragile and psychedelic suggesting an electronic equivalent of the British shoegaze bands while maintaining the wildly aggressive stripped-down DIY spirit of punk that informed the ideals of the originary wave of European minimal electronic bands. This second edition of 150 copies also contains the additional track 'Cold Forever', recorded in late 2005 which originally appeared on the Wierd Compilation(2006).
Split 7" from two new NYC synth-punk outfits, pure raw analogue electronics at its finest. Led er Est's 'Fingers Curling Up' is an epic pop track, owing as much to guitar-wave bands as to the minimal synth canon. S.S.P.S (Secret Servants of the Private Sector aka Jon Porkchop from Excepter) mines even bleaker terrain with the sprawling aggro industrial nightmare 'Sweet Children'. Both trax mixed by Veronica Vasicka, limited numbered edition of 500, complete with hand-made silkscreened glow in the dark covers!
Another fantastic Sleep Museum release from Mark Solotroff's Bloodlust label in Chicago following the 'Street' private series 7-inch single. Four tracks of rhythmic, darkly melodic minimal electronics and drum machine-with Robert Anthony's signature twisted yet utterly romantic echo-laden melancholic lyrics. The fifth track is a frozen-cold 27-minute long experimental analogue synth piece, far closer to the M.B.-style of experimental industrial electronics; We are calling this an EP, even though it clocks in at 46-minutes; Professionally duplicated CD, single panel, double-sided insert; color and black and white artwork; in jewel box with shrinkwrap.

New 7" from NYC's Sleep Museum. Pressed in an edition of 300 copies on Mark Solotroff's(Bloodyminded, A Vague Disquiet, ex-Intrinsic Action) Bloodlust! label; White vinyl; White labels with minimal black text; Unmarked white cardboard sleeves - sealed on three sides; Black and white inserts; True minimal electronics, rhythmic, darkly melodic synth, unrepentantly eccentric vocals and dour lyrics; Utterly contemporary, yet also reminiscent of certain early-1980s "cold" music, or even electronic-era Death in June; private series number ten.
WIERD is honored to finally have available the 'Penance' EP by Miami's Opus Finis. 3 new drippping wet trax of Venezuelan-Cuban analogue electronics to assure the Neo-Classical nightmares will never leave you alone in the cold.
A1. A Black Spring
A2. Inextinguishable Pyre
B1. Penance
2 new killer trax from the Very Rare duo of 8* on vox and Ramiro Jeancarlo on synth. Frightening epileptic electronics with intense childlike vocals for long lonely nights in the dark synth psych ward.
Two new amazing uptempo classics from the dark synth king of Miami Mr. Ramiro Jeancarlo. Pulsing, dirty, hedonistic electronics with Spanish vox.
Martial Canterel‘s second LP release is entitled ‘Austerton’, recorded in 2003. The synth process is pared down even further. One of the foundational principles he abides by is for all of the music either live or in the home studio to be accomplished - performed - live in one push. The reconstructed ruins of Xanten inform the claustrophilic narratives of loss, indecipherability, and betrayal. The analog synthesizer is now becoming a folk instrument...no longer necessarily an attempt at some conception of the future, but, rather, its impossibility, a lament for its ultimate undoing.
Xeno and Staccato‘s 7" vinyl single, with 2 songs,
‘Cara‘s kiss’ and ‘Jardins d‘ete’.
Haunting female vox with pulsing analogue electronics. Self-made design, specially printed cover with insert on quality paper, limited numbered edition of 500.
Released on Ramiro Jeancarlo‘s new label Staccato du Mal Records.
Xeno and Staccato is a collaboration between Liz Wendelbo of Xeno & Oaklander (Brooklyn), and Ramiro Jeancarlo of Staccato duMal (Miami).
