This week WIERD welcomes the Very Rare sounds of NITE JEWEL from minimal electronic Los Angeles for a live performance at midnite! this will be the first in a series of 3 excellent new frozen hot LA minimal synth bands to hit the WIERD stage in the next 6 weeks, soon to be followed by the great Frank Alpine(coming to the WIERD March 3rd) and Tearist(March 24th), all of whom recently joined us at the first annual L.A. WIERD Festival 2009 this past November. Ramona and co. have crafted a truly idiosyncratic sound in the night jewel crown, combining the sounds of classic minimal synth with those of both mid-period Italodisco and 70s US/UK soft rock, its quite unlike anything synthworthy out there right now, so slide on in on the JEWEL-encrusted Angelino ice and get Very Rare to-NITE! http://www.myspace.com/nitejewel
I'm proud to finally be able to say the WIERD will be making a long overdue return to the continent this March and April! Xeno & Oaklander will be joined on stage in Paris by our beloved French allies Frank(just Frank) Thursday evening March 11th, and X&O will play a second show Sat. night March 13th at the great 'Nullzeit' Party inside the mysterious WORM in Rotterdam, The Netherlands:
http://agenda.wormweb.nl/agenda.php?id=3129 where Sean and Liz will be joined by our old friends Twilight Ritual from Belgium as well as Dutch minimal electronic legends Das Ding! The full-scale Xeno & Oaklander/Led Er Est European tour will officially commence on April 13th in London and take both bands on an 18 date tour through the UK, Ireland, Belgium, Holland, Germany, France and Italy! Many more details to come on all these shows in the next few weeks, rest assured the WIERD is coming to the theatre in you at long last!
The next release on Wierd Records will be the long awaited debut LP from Frank(just Frank) due out in April! The band did their first ever interview this past week in Paris for Rockfort.com:

This week's WIERD is dedicated to everyone who has experienced the mild anxiety triggered by the Very Rare realization that sending someone a 'PM' before noon is quite literally giving the unsolicited gift or time travel...don't panic..deeeep breath, I'm pretty confident the world is still there outside this sad little glowing box, but let me go check just a moment please... ...actually...sorry to say but I'm afraid that as I gaze out this fragile, frigid, frozen cold window...
...That at long last the man who started it all back in the dark days of 2001 MARTIAL CANTEREL is back tonite for a live performance of pure, unadulterated minimal electronic music at midnight!!! This will be Sean's first live show in the WIERD World proper since last summer, and seeing as the VRicked winds should be whippin up quite the Vague Froide Moderne Blizzard this evening, tonite's performance will certainly be much colder than the last! Sean will be playing a whole new set of trax from his first new LP in over 3 years coming later this year from the WIERD, and from the incredible demos I've hear this ones destined to quite the 'Opus'. Arrive early to catch a glimpse of the master craftsman at work in true 'Windscreen Time'...VR.

In other news of the WIERD, at long last I would like to proudly proclaim that last week WIERD achieved one of the keystone moments of what my too-many-years-of-club-crawling-to-admit-to has demonstrated to be true 'achievement in the genre': someone left their shoes at the club...yes its true, thank you very much(...I'd like to first thank my parents...love you guys and...) And let me assure you kiddies, it was 8 degrees out, and these are certainly NOT the fierce 5 inch heels of a bitchy queen who predictably(albeit charmingly) stormed out in a tragically unnoticed VRamatic fluster after googling his lesbian lover in the powder room, or a lovely young debutante type who forgot her dispensable little post-happy hour shopping from Jeffrey, these shoes are so frighteningly practical they could only belong to what one might refer to as the 'post-everything/20-nothing male hetero-American'...this WIERD's for you Bro high-five!, long live the dissappearing 'New Balance' anchoring your wierd world, guess it didn't quite work out thank god, send me a 'PM' tomorrow AM and we'll get VR together in the frozen cold future to exchange eyelashes! :)))xoVRp.
And speaking of time zone traversing, I just wanted to remind everyone as I do 4 times a year with each grand slam event, the Australian open is now down to the round of 16, so please expect 2-3 business day delays on all mail order enquiries.
The WIERD webshop is open at last! All shopping carts equipped w high-end fog machines and a full array of single malts of course. New distro releases will gradually be added by bands that have played the party or appeared on the compilations, new killers from Tobias Bernstrup, Frank Alpine, Led Er Est, and the new Opus Finis/Newclear Waves split 7" are in stock now.
The new X&O studio video for the track 'Rendez-Vous d'Or' off of the 'Sentinelle' LP is complete!:

The new feature on WIERD in the February issue of Dazed and Confused Magazine is on newstands now. In the common case you simply cannot bear physical objects anymore, you can read it here on the website(Jan. 22nd)
Lastly for everyone who ordered the incredible 'Danza Meccanica' compilation from Alessandro of Mannequin Records in Rome when he was here to spin the party a few weeks back, I have your copies, so send me an AM tomorrow night and we'll go back in time to Milano 1980 together, and while you're at it email Ale asap and demand he press another edition of this beautifully designed masterpiece chronicling the seminal years of cold wave and minimal synth music in Italy, truly an fantastic record and long lost world that needs to be heard anew in 2010.

Hello young cold people of the wild WIERD world...it is officially 2010...Very Rare. I must say my first thought upon waking up in the new year last Friday morning was the far far beyond apocalyptic fact that noone really seems to know exactly how to 'say' this number denoting the 'year' we live in. Of course the first thing I did was to immediately call my favorite post-everything hotline to the frozen cold world of never-ending abstraction '311'. An apparently lovely, energetic young lady answered, "Hello, 311 what can I do for you?"..."Yes hello, I was calling to ask if you can tell me exactly: how is the new year we are now living in correctly 'pronounced' phonetically?"..."Well sir that is certainly the first time I have ever been asked that. You know I don't really know the answer to that, but everyone around the office here seems to be saying 'Twenty, Ten', so I suppose that is the best answer I can give you"..."Oh I see...but excuse me I'm a bit confused as that is two separate numbers - why is it not a single, unified numerical digit like 'two thousand nine' was? I loved that year, I felt very assured to live in a 'single' number, one nice, clear world inside an excellent 'odd' numbered digit that seemed quite 'real' as a result of its 'singularity', made me feel self-assured...I mean I understand it for something like '1985' which was fine and I totally loved, as to pronounce 'one thousand, nine hundred and eighty-five' is simply too inconvenient, but last year was 'two thousand nine', why is it not pronounced 'two thousand ten'? Living in a year denoted by two separate numbers barely adhering together and seemingly about to rip apart is very difficult for me...ugh it makes me so anxious, like I am a tiny, frail tighrope walker barely balancing on a very fragile thin line between two realities - the 'twenty' and the 'ten'...and I don't know which is more 'real' or 'right'...do you know what I mean?"..."Well sir, you certainly have an active imagination wow hmm, and by the way I love the 'eighties' too awesome!...but you know what they say: this whole 'on-line' world IS now 'reality' ha so crazy right?!, god knows I spend more time on-line than off Yikes! :)))...So that is probably why I am sure yeah. :)))...Is there anything else I can help you with today?"...
VR.
This being said...whatever the hell IT is, and determining this has been the WIERD's tragic life's work still 'in progress'...or maybe regress...quite appropriately thus tonite Wierd is pleased to welcome the return of DEATH DOMAIN to the weekly party to walk the cold, Wierd, anxiety-fueled line of latenight analogue electronic pleasure for a live performance at midnight! Adam has been kind enough to take an evening off from his intense Phd studies in Parasitology at Johns Hopkins to slide in on the WIERD latenight ice to play us his new record 'Ethidium Bromide' out on the excellent new minimal electronic-fueled DARK ENTRIES Records in San Francisco! Happy New WIERD from Wierd Records, Brooklyn!
Well its been a wild WIERD whirlwind of a year and somehow this tiny, frail icicle of a ship is still afloat out there on the distant horizon a seafaring, and triumphantly all alone VeryRare-ing. As is always is the case at the end of every year there are too many people to thank for their ever gracious and generous help and support in keeping this 'thing' going....whatever IT is, its still WIERD as ever. Beyond the countless DJs, bands and lovely patrons in our eminently confusing, wonderfully frozen cold uncomfortable weekly pleasurefest of an establishment in 2009 extra VRecial thanks go out to Jasper and Mike for keeping myself and the weekly party goin week in and out, Frankie Teardrop for all things web and technologically related at the label, and as always the amazing Mary Cassidy, Naomi Ramirez, Jimi Patterson, and Jordan Levine for their neverending dedication to maintenance of the photo and video archives week after week...VR.
That being said tonite will be the last WIERD Party of 2009 as we welcome the debut one-time-only live performance of a true WIERD Party supergroup CREATION MYTH for a live performance at midnight! And its with absolute pleasure as tonite's performers include the long overdue return our long-time friend and SF/Bay area frozen cold killer queen TAMARYN to the WIERD stage who will be accompanied by Ms. Zohra Atash from Religious to Damn and Josh Strawn(Blacklist/Religious to Damn) on unVaguely Froide-centric guitars a glittering and shining black as all white hell!...Its bound to be another Gypsy New Wave Worldly, wind machine enthralling feast of early 70s meets late 80s psychedelic ritualistic industrial!!! See you all in the forzen cold cave of visceral joy, bring your sorceress robes and bells ladies, time to bid fare thee well for another Wierd year has darkly and splendidly dissappeared :)))

Tonite WIERD welcomes the long-overdue weekly party debut of VOODOO VOCALS for a live performance at midnight! A long time friend of the WIERD die hard born and raised on the slimy Sunset Strip of frozen hot Los Angeles, many of you know the amazing international playboy drifter and visual artist exVRordinaire Mr. Anthony Burdin aka 'The Skum Pirate' from one of his countless fantastic gallery shows the world over including his unforgettable neverending desertmix Skumscape installation at the 2006 Whitney Biennial! Tonite Anthony will be presenting something quite unlike we've ever seen at the party - an excellent new project entitled 'Voodoo Vocals Christens the WIERD' which will be a retrospective look back at and absolute internal destruction of the frozen cold history of WIERD, featuring hauntings of the likes of Martial Canterel, Led Er Est, Sleep Museum, Xeno & Oaklander, and many more. The original alchemic artform, Voodoo Vocals is quite a phenom most diffikult to articulate - The master of pure cold Skum opens up the mirrored window to the black wax universe, slides in the backdoor of the track and the haunting begins...he slowly creepy crawls around, skumming the fuck outa anything in his dirty little way, then just when you thought you knew what was goin on he slides out the secret locked gate, never to be heard from again...and everything dies...only to reborn again and again...over and over, one inexcusable little black circle at a time...my goodness how could you possibly resist this one kiddies? Do you dare to bare the Skumtastic pleasures of darksynth master of the Very Rare???

Next week the WIERD Party will be 'literally' Very Rare as we're takin a beyond VRecessary week off. Its been a lovely wild ride of a year in the WIERD - over 100 live performances and too many killer cold trax entered the world to even remember them all it seems now. I'm linked out from all the Wierdness this week so go google yourselves in the shadows alone, but I wanted to call everyone's attention to what will be the last our live performance event of the year as WIERD returns Wednesday December 30th when we proudly welcome the debut live performance of CREATION MYTH - a new collaborative one time only ritualistic all-star ceremony bidding farewell to 2009 and VRinging in the Happy New Wierd by none other than the ever elegant gypsy wave queen herself Tamaryn from San Francisco, Brandon Curtis of Secret Machines, and Zohra Atash of Religious to Damn with a few other surprise guests as well...see you all in the WIERD World tonite!

This week Wierd plays host to a demonstration that the Minimal Electronic gods are awash with the return of the repressed - it was only a matter of time before the floodgates of restraint necessary to maintain the body of the classic, fragile minimal synth sound started eroding as the digitalized 'masculine' voice comes back with a Very Rare vengeance. And this week the spirit of Electronic Body Music will indeed take the WIERD stage as we welcome Blush Response and Head Trip Conception for a double bill live performance! Very important please take note ***TONITE'S SHOW WILL BEGIN PROMPTLY AT 11PM*** So for all you Head Hunters and Rivet-Heads-in-denial, tonite we're gonna party like its 1989!...

The amazing Joe Daniels from the Angular/Domino label in London just sent over the link to this great new site he has begun to prepare everyone for the epic historical compilation release 'WIERD Presents: Cold Waves and Minimal Electronics'(2 x LP gatefold/CD, Angular Records 2010) chronicling the long lost history of cold wave and minimal electronic music the world over he and I have been organizing for much of the past nearly 18 months now. I'm not at liberty to disclose the final 19 song tracklist yet, but a tentative release date of late February next year has been set for this one and we will indeed be holding official release parties in Paris, Berlin, London, and New York for this monster of a collection featuring an endless all-star cast from the secret history of the cold wave world, past and VResent. http://coldwaves.tumblr.com/
Also an early warning to all our 'Art-Worldly' supporters - the next excellent 'WIERD Presents:' event will be at ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH on Thursday evening December 4th at the Living Room in downtown South Beach. As we have done in many WIERD year's past, this particular party will see the ghostly return of an incredible cast of artists and DJs very we may perhaps tentatively once again call 'Wierd Presents: THE PLEASURES OF XANTEN AND VRIENDS' - featuring live performances from the likes of Xeno & Oaklander, Martial Canterel, Epee du Bois, Staccato du Mal, Opus Finis, The Siamese Pearl, and Flesh Graey Display...in numerous maximal electronic formations. More info on this lovely event next week, just for old times sake I'll leave you with this great video from one of the many 'Pleasures of Xanten' performances of years past at WIERD LIVE #4...certainly a chillingly icy night to remember:

This week WIERD proudly welcomes yet another Very Rarely and above all INORDINATELY exciting plethora of guest performers as our new VRiends from the misty cold bay area world BRONZE will be swingin through the weekly party for a live performance at midnight! Spoiled as we have much of the past few months by so many new killer bands such Twisted Wires, Silk Flowers, Cult of Youth, and Zola Jesus, Bronze combine electronics with traditional rock and accoustic instruments to meld a fantastic darkly hybridized sound that might be called something along the lines of 'Psychedelic Industrial Music' - like if Ethan Port of Savage Republic broke into Floyd's practice space in 1968, kicked young Syd out and called Holger Czukay from Can back to the future on the sell foam to join up on bass with Mr. Waters and they cruised on into the WIERD to get VR...fuck man top that, my goodness! :)

So as if that wasn't enough, our beloved investigateur of all vinylicious pleasures Jeffo! informed me earlier this week that we will also be joined by himself and the amazing Mr. ANDY BELL of British synth pop legends ERASURE! I will not be held responsible as starting any rumors here kiddies but I did coincidentally get several txts this week merely 'informing me' that Andy's VRiend and one of the true godfathers of minimal electronics himself who will only here be denoted as 'V' has also been spotted in the city in the past week while Erasure is recording their new record...so maybe...no way...but then again its WIERD you never knoo oh...Ah the synthywave pleasure that await us all tomorrow evening see you all in the frozen cold cloudzzzz.... http://www.myspace.com/erasureofficial

Jamie J. over at the Fader just posted a new WIERD Records feature on the Fader.com site with a new and unreleased Xeno & Oaklander video from Jordan Levine and a new freely downloadable mix of frozen hot new trax all made in the past few months from bands who have played in the party this year, this won't be live forever: http://www.thefader.com/2009/11/02/freak-scene-46-wierd-records/
Secondly, its a bit much to get into here but next Thursday the WIERD family restrained circus of pleasures will be taking our annual bon voyage to the west coast as WIERD is joining forces with Sarah Stinson of LA's excellent new KILLING SPREE Party to present the WIERD FESTIVAL 2009! - 2 nights, 8 bands in downtown LA, to be followed by a third performance Sunday evening at the Knockout in San Francisco. The fliers, and a complete list of bands and special activities and parties surrounding the fest are now up on the website:
Speaking of LA, another loyal WIERD supporter Liz O. at the LA Weekly just posted a nice piece on Blacklist, for everyone out west keep an eye out for Liz's epic WIERD feature preview of next weekend fest in the Weekly next Wed. Blacklist will be playing with Swedish Indie Wave darlings of the moment The Merry Onnettes tomorrow evening at Union Hall in BK and WIERD will play host to the afterparty.
